The actor's team confirmed the reports on his official Twitter and Facebook pages shortly after 10 p.m. E

The 40-year old actor died on Saturday afternoon in a single car accident that resulted in an explosion in Southern California. The accident happened in Santa Clarita, just north of Los Angeles.

Multiple sources told TMZ that the actor was a passenger in his new Porsche GT when the driver somehow lost control and slammed into a post or a tree and then the car burst into flames. Both passengers were killed.

According to TMZ, Walker was in Santa Clarita for a car show for the charity Reach Out Worldwide, which was raising money for the Philippines typhoon relief effort.

Universal Studios issued a statement at 10:40 p.m. ET.

"All of us at Universal are heartbroken. Paul was truly one of the most beloved and respected members of our studio family for 14 years, and this loss is devastating to us, to everyone involved with the FAST AND FURIOUS films, and to countless fans. We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to Paul's family."

A southern California native, Walker began working as an actor as a teenager, appearing on several TV series, including Highway to Heaven, Who's the Boss?, andCharles in Charge.

After a breakout roles in 1998's Pleasantville and 1999's Varsity Blues, Walker starred alongside Vin Diesel in 2001's The Fast and the Furious. Seen at the time as a fun B-movie, the film became a cult hit, and spawned a highly lucrative franchise, with six films to date.

Walker has appeared in all but one of those films, and had been shooting Fast & Furious 7 with director James Wan for next summer.

He is survived by his 15-year-old daughter, Meadow.

Video from the scene quickly appeared on YouTube.

As sad as it is, what a hell of a way to go out. Rich, successful at 200mph in a Porsche Carrera GT.

Sounds a lot damn better than dieing alone, old, in some depressing palliative care unit while shitting yourself and not remembering who anyone is.

So rest in peace Paul, you made some memorable movies and chose a great way to go out even though it might have been a bit early.

At the end of the last one it heads back to Tokyo. Tokyo drift is the only one he wasn't in so I think it won't affect it too much

street view hit the light pole. Seems cemented into the ground? unlike most aus light poles witch detach and fall over with not much force. Long right uphill corner & can see the skid marks in that second vid.

TMZ has reported that Paul Walker's childhood best friend was the first to arrive on the scene. According to his story, Walker and the driver Roger Rodas appeared to be dead in the vehicle. TMZ writes:

Paul's best friend from childhood, Nute, grabbed a fire extinguisher and was among the first to arrive on scene. We're told Nute frantically tried to extinguish the flames ... even though it appeared to him both men were already dead.

Apparently, when the proper officials arrived on the scene, things got even worse.

When the fire dept arrived they tried to pull Nute away, but he was overwrought and punched a firefighter. We're told Sheriff's deputies put Nute -- and several other of Paul and Roger's friends -- in custody, but let them go when they realized the circumstances.

All I can say is that our hearts go out to everyone who Walker touched in his life and to those who witnessed the horrific crash.

The world is full of sad things no doubt but because people are watching him and admiring him makes them think/feel they have a bit more of a connection where as 12 people in iraq people have no clue.... that is certainly not to say that 12 people dying is not horrific because it is and they had family and friends that would miss them greatly

yeah that's very true. those people im sure haven't heard about the suicide bombing. but still. the ammount of people that are geniunely upset about it gets me mad. sure its a pity he died. but it hasnt actually directly impacted anyone except his REAR friends and family.

im sure his family and friends don't want the media attention surrounding the whole situation either.

This is why so many people are sad over this. He was a down to earth guy who was loved by fan on the screen and off. He was a role modal. Helping others in need. Not like most who get on the drugs and do stupid shit.

He apparently was doing a charity event to raise money for the victims of the typhoon in Phillipines
